I was approached to check out this tape by a dude from the UK. Borrowing Cole's "The Warm Up", title, he goes by the name of Dragg, aka Sean S. Bumping it now. Simple beats, production is decent. I can definitely see dude having girls in the club going. "Visions" is the best song on the tape.
Hope we get to see dude grow!

I found Rockie Fresh by accident. I was honestly trying to find an A$AP ROCKY song, and stumbled upon "Drivin 88". OHHH BOYYY BUT WHENNN I DIIIIDDD.. This guy is dope...... I legit, wanna have sex with this mixtape. Like, I'd take this music, and rub it in my crotch if I could. Too much?! Listen to it and tell me otherwise.
Hosted by DJ Ill Will! The tape starts off with Rockie saying exactly what he wants. He wants to make music, and he wants the good shit. I will start off by saying flat out, this "mixtape" could have easily been an album, EASILY. This guy doesn't have a fucking care in the world, and you get that vibe from the tape.
Filled with mid-tempo beats, a chilled voice that gives you shivers, and lines that make you love music all over again, this Chicago rapper is every bit of refreshing. After we leave the intro, we head into "Drivin '88". Smooth flow and the help of Casey Veggies, you're already head bobbin.. Then we move into "Never Never". YUP! A SBTRKT SAMPLE! I nearly hit the roof with joy when I heard that shit. OH MAN. My heart is beating so fast right now just typing about it. "They thought that I would fail, they only see me making it", he says. This local rapper is blowing up, he knows it, and he deserves it. He has punchlines, but not a lot.. and I feel like that's solely because he doesn't need them. He's saying what he feels, and it comes off right. There's just something about his flow that captures you.. You forget you're listening to a song, and you legit feel like he's talking to you. I won't get into this song by song.. I will say I'm giving it a 4.5/5. EVEN though I think the "Back to the Future" deal is a little wah. I understand that the theme works for the tape, I appreciate the movie references.. but sometimes it gets a little.. "been here". Wale already did that. AND, some of the cuts are a little messy for me. Don't take that for anything more than it is, this is probably going to be my favorite mixtape of the year. I don't see much wrong with it.. so I can't really take away from it. I just can't. I'd feel guilty if I said this is anything less than a 4.5. I even hate the song, "Turn it up", because of it's pop type sound. BUT STILL. It's a solid tape. Regardless of THAT fact, Rockie deserves all the good talk he's getting right now. I look forward to seeing/hearing what's next. Legit this has been on rotation for over a week now.
BADBADNOTGOODBADBADNOTGOOD has released a live mixtape.. and it's awesome. I need to see these guys, and asap. When Alex first told me about them, he said they do live renditions, like Keys N Krates. They're more of a jazz type deal though.. so you still get that live feel, but with a more jazzy type tone. It's a nice relaxing mixtape. Not Keys N Krates, but worth it.. Well, also hailing from Toronto, these dudes do their own on live renditions well. Plus they picked damn good songs to cover. Don't you want to just take what you're hearing and eat it up with a really big spoon?
I heard this one before the original. To tell truth, I haven't listened to the original, but I will after this one. I haven't paid enough attention to Asap, and that's truth. I've heard enough good things about him, but we all know I do this shit on my own time. So to begin! Does this shit make anyone else wanna stay in with some dope company, some brews, and smoke? Really though, Houston is in the building with this one. FUUUUCKKK. This is so grimey. So dirty. Lyrically, mediocre. HAHA. I appreciate the shit rap as much as hip hop, and this is top Grade A business in the shit rap department. How do you.. what? Yeah. I hope you get that, because I don't know any other way to put it.
I'm actually writing this on a Wednesday and pre-writing it for a Monday. Hopefully by then this has blown up enough. Slim K twerked this well.
I've never even been a huge fan of chopping and screwing.. it usually fucks everything up, half the reason I chose to listen to this version first.. It makes it easier for me to judge it.
I need some purple in a cup! CUPS OF THAT XO.
If you're down to just dumb down and throw your stink face in the air.. you should get the tape. The whole tape consists of weed, drank, groupies, sex, and high type instrumentals that make you feel hood. I've never been to Houston, but some how at this moment in time, want to immediately rep it.
"ABC's, bad bitch, double d's.. I got it on my chest, my nigga this is what I'm breathin.. So mami show me how that neck feel.. for now just chill.." - not exactly lyricism.. but the stink face in me appreciates it.
The intro is incredible. This beat is aweeesome. & I love his voice in it. My only complaint about this, is the instrumentals over-powering his voice. I find that it's consistent with the entire tape.. you have to really listen, which I don't mind.. It just almost sounds like he's doing back up vocals for himself.. which.. is.. dumb. Personally, if I was editing this one, I'd take the snare out and kick up his vocals. In summary: the production on this tape is absolutely NO comparison to House of Balloons. There is no doubt with that.
I will throw down an applause for how different the production is. It's a weird, dark, questioning, nightmare, hang-over kind of sound. If that doesn't make sense to you, you haven't listened to it yet.
LIFE OF THE PARTY IS MY FAAAVORITE! Can we talk about the control Tesfaye has over his voice? The thing that stands out the most when you listen to this dude is his sound. He could do this shit acapella and still have me questioning if he's a real person.. I'm still in half belief that he's an experimental robot that escaped from Area 51 and is rebelling against the government. His voice is just.. that good. It takes you up and lifts you. It actually feels like, it lifts you. & he's definitely improved on his vocals. IS IT POSSIBLE?! Yes, it is. & he has.
When I first listened to this tape, I hated it. I was like, "What is this!?". House of Balloons is simply a tough entrance. Tesfaye certainly took his music in a new way. He wanted to keep growing, keep improving, and he wanted to put out something different. Thursday is definitely different from the House of Balloons. It just lacks consistency. There is no flow to it.. I found myself continuously checking to make sure the songs weren't on random. Each song, on its own is good.. but put all together is a little confusing for the listener. You're thrown around on a ride that leaves you confused, not knowing where to go. However, once you're ten seconds into a song, you're back in it for the ride.. and you're able to enjoy it.
The bottom line is, The Weeknd is putting out music that you won't hear anywhere, and it's damn good. If I heard this tape first, I would rate it higher.. but the House of Balloons is just a tough bar to pass.. A little too busy, a little too much. We'll see what happens when Echoes of Silence drops. Til then, it's still an amazing tape that deserves a download. Go get it.
So I know it's not really Monday, but this dropped today.. so, you should download it.
Not only does he quote Nas, BUT.. he speaks truth. "Hard work and dedication" is the theme of this tape, and you definitely get a sense of that. Kidd has been throwing down since I knew him.. and that's what? 8 years now? Anyone that sticks with the grind for 8 years screams passion. I don't think there's a day where this guy doesn't breathe music, and you get the message from his verses.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCALS! He deserves a trillion downloads, and a trillion listens. & you can get it for free! By clicking THIS
So Tyler the Creator took to twitter to throw down a mix he did with DJ Stank Daddy. It's a 75 minute mix of songs that remind him of summer. I can agree. There's a little bit of everything on here. From the Clipse, to Pac, to Erykah Badu, to T.I., to Jay-Z, to Cam'ron.. the list goes on. and he throws in a comment every track change, over the track so it's not annoying. They're comical as fuck too, "This song makes me wanna fart". Like really, how am I so obsessed with this guy?! lol. I wish I was a damn dj so I could compose my own summer mix. It would probably be almost the exact same, but with a lot of MGMT, Cudi, Wu-Tang and Nas. Whoot. Anyways, since he already did one.. take a listen.. and eat a popsicle or have a beer or have a smoke or drive around or take a walk or ride the bus or lounge out or barbeque while you do!
GOODNESS GRACIOUS. I love The Weeknd. I seriously love this guy so fucking much, that I might just die. I don't even want to review this. I simply, can't. I can't say enough good things about it. Anything I type just isn't enough. Tesfaye has a voice that literally melts you once you hear it. I haven't heard good R&B for a hot minute.. and this shit, is quite the diverse R&B mix. With an indie, electro, smooth type sound.. you can't help but wonder if you're listening to a mixtape, or if you're in absolute utopia. Even with all the infested lyrics about drugs and alcohol. Don Mckinney is that dude on the production tip, and he did his job. If you don't get that raw emotion from the instrumentals and synthesizers and pleasing bass.. you'll certainly get it from the lyrics.. and that's something new for the R&B world. This whole tape is on another level. One that no one has achieved ever. He completely set the bar for himself. He completely brought something new to the table.. and he completely brought something so different to my ears that I appreciate music SO MUCH MORE. It's almost as if I want to grab Tesfaye and say, "Yo, how could you like, do that to other music? How could you make everyone not want to listen to anything else ever again?".. because honestly, that's really what he did. This mixtape is the best mixtape I've listened to in yeeeeaaaars. I wouldn't change a damn thing.. If hoping for anything, I just hope he can keep passing the level he set so mother fucking high!
I know I should've done this mixtape a LONG time ago. I haven't done a Mixtape Monday in foreverrrr.. feels like it anyway.. & I haven't said shit about Frank Ocean yet.. except on twitter.. but that wasn't here. Before I express my undying love for Frank Ocean.. I'll say that I didn't do the mixtape because when I listen to mixtapes, I like to have the time to.. without interruptions. I like the full tape to get a full listen, whether it's bad or not.. Well my boyfriend came in for the weekend, and he gave me some hunky dory about "YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT!". He remains correct. His voice is so drop dead fuckin' fabulous.. I haven't felt this way about a voice since John Legend first dropped. I am seriously fuckin' astounded with dude. Production, amazing..! & with these kinds of stories.. you're placed right there, with that notch in your grin.. saying "Yeah, man.", as if you were right there with them. So fuck all of the general praising.. let's go into this by track. Strawberry Swing, hello summer breeze! Hello long grass and no bugs! Hello sunshine and laughter. I don't know about you, but that's exactly where I was placed for this on. Novacane, definitely one of my favorite songs on the tape. "Every single record, auto-tunin', zero emotion, muted emotion, pitch corrected, computed emotion.. I blame it on the model broad with a Hollywood smile, ow. Stripper booty and a rack like wow" AND THEN TO MOVE ON TO COACHELLA! Yes. Let's take it there! Let's take it to where celebs lose themselves to groupies.. if anyone takes this chance to call me a groupie, I'll kill you lol. Noooooovaaaacaaane. Don't lose yourselves people. We All Try.. just nice, just nice. Bitches Talkin, LOL @ that radiohead comment. "What is a radiohead?!".. IF ANY DUDE, ANY DUDE, came over to my place, and pulled out my radiohead cd and said that, I'd tell them to fuckin' leave. Songs for Women THAT INTRO. Be still, my heart. This is going to be the next song on my blog, believe it. This is my absolute favorite song on the tape.. I wasn't really feeling the chorus too much.. amazing song, just felt a little tad bit poppy for me.. however, completely feel like no one's even stepped up to the plate with a song like this before. & that drake part is hiiiilarious. Frank Ocean, I've heard of you!! & although you might not make songs for women, I need you in my life! Come. Please. hahaha.. Lovecrimes, whenever there's a girl laughing in a track, and it sounds cute.. you know it's a good time. There Will be Tears, * sigh. REALLY. Really. Okay. Perfect. Swim Good, amazing beat. So simple. Dust, keep living. Keep loving. & when the ink dries, and the pages turn to dust.. Who's that laughing in the library?.. Is that you? American Wedding, a long one. lol. NATURE FEELS, oh HOWWWWW I LOOOOVE MGMT!!!!!!!!!! & how I love Frank Ocean for hitting up MGMT! & for how this song is about fucking! HAHA. & fucking in a garden?! Who has done that?! Who has fucking wrote that?! "Making love, underneath the cherry leaves, baby girl, tell me how my nature feels?" That's fuckin' fine by me. If you can take that kind of shit and make that shit sound sexy.. well, you get a fuckin' A.
Solid mixtape. 4.5/5 for me. Need to bang to this one for the rest of the year.
I know I haven't been following my regular blogging scheme, but I can't let this Monday pass without throwing down this. Fourteen songs deep, this is certainly enough to make you want the album.. til then though, have a listen. The Don Cannon shouts are beyond annoying.. but soon in, with how good it is - you don't even hear them. They just wanna make music, and that's the best kind of emotion in songs. Push, grind, get it. They're moving along nicely. "Supernegroes" gets you all hype and shit. Sampling both "It Takes Two" (rob base and dj ez) AND "Lap Dance" by NERD, it's ALL SORTS of amazing. WHO THOUGHT OF MIXING THESE TWO GEMS TOGETHER?! BRILLIANT! A fun mixtape that I wish would play at the bar all night and in life all day, you'll thoroughly enjoy the eargasm. It's my favorite song on the tape, and should probably be yours too. Anti-freeze is easily a tie. THIS FUCKING SHIT!
"eyes up, eyes up, that is not my wallet, miss/ yeah i'm big headed but don't make it so obvious/ i'm travellin the globe now, workin on my politics/ runnin for head of the state.. every verse i murder, i don't care what the topic is/"
Easily giving this one a 4/5. It kinda jumps around in a bit, but is definitely going to be in rotation for awhile.
it's been awhile since i've listened to kid sister.. i had the opportunity to check out her show (GET THIS, for FREEEEE!) &i bailed on it last minute cause i was sick. whoops. i can honestly say the opening did not impress me. i was like "ew, yuck, no thanks".. but i'm not sure if that's because it's bad or if it's because i haven't listened to her in ages.. theeennnn the second track rang in. OH YEAH OH YEAH! i'm pretty sure this is the kind of tune that runs my brain.. like background music for your thoughts. fun thoughts. sexy thoughts. those kinds of thoughts. OMYGAHHDDD. i wanna go dancing. i walked into my room, and it was just a disaster. that kinda shit makes me not wanna be home, freal lol.. when my place is messy, you know i'm never home.. cause i just don't like living in it.. so i just get dressed, don't look at it, and bounce. swaying away from the topic of messy-ness, this tape isn't. kid sister is damn well entertaining. she's fun in so many ways.. and if this shit doesn't get you dancing in your seat, it will definitely get you all sorts of excited. her voice has that kinda voice that you wanna grab out the speaker and just start making out with her.. believe me it's good shit.
CAN I TAKE YOU HOME, CAN I, CAN I TAKE YOU HOME? BOY YOU KNOW YOU WRONG, BOY, BOY, BOY YOU KNOW YOU'RE WRONG.
beats are lovely, catchdubs does the mixing well, and it's kid sister. kid sister is always a rocking time, and new stuff from her is fucking grrrreeeattt. i'm just gonna shut the fuck up and start dancing in my seat. 3/5 though, only for that shitty intro.. and for some of the techno singing.. ew. me no likey. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, it's GOOOLD, fool's gold, i should say ;)
that was poissibly the shittiest non-review i've ever done. eat me.
it's shit we've already heard with different production.. but as a devoted nas fan, i won't stray from throwing this on the speakers. lost tapes 2 does not yet have a release date.. and i rarely think about it. i try not to, cause when i do, i get frustrated and antsy. this one should hold me for awhile.
my boyfriend asked me to do this review like three weeks ago or some shit, and i was like "yeah yeah, i'll get to it". well.. it's time.
i don't think i can fully express my appreciation for cole. every single fucking time i hear a j cole song that i haven't heard before - i rewind it. dude is so ridiculously blessed with words, it's beautiful. there are some music days, where you throw something new on, and you just let it play. you can't do that with j cole, you have to sit there, with a clear head, and just take in every word he says. it's rare that the dude actually has a bad line, and that's what's so crazy. each line is followed right after previous awesome.. so while you're breathing in one line, he's already on his third.. and then you gotta rewind it back. this tape is no different. the back to the topic freestyle made me want to lick his face.. "voice gone as shit, i think it's gonna make it sound a lil, a lil iller".. but i don't want to just talk about swimfanism. "you got it" is the first song i heard before listening to the mixtape front to back.. and the line "know you got a 9-5, i'll be your 5-9". AHHH. yeah. yeah j cole, yeah. I JUST MIGHT CHANGE YA LIFE! i think the best part about this mixtape is that when you first hear a song, your first initial instinct is, "HOLLYYY SHIT!! this song is so fucking good, it's my favorite song on the tape".. then you hear the next song, and you say the exact same thing. "you got it" is probably the weakest song on the tape.. and that might sound like i'm dragging the tape down, but i'm not. that just goes to show how fucking good it is. this shit needs to be hard copied and sold everywhere.. and if i haven't convinced you yet.. let me continue. i am always thoroughly impressed with him. i don't want to compare this to the warm up either. a friend of mine asked me which i think is better, and i won't answer it. that's like asking me what do i like better, puppies or kittens. there's no higher level between the two for me. he surely isn't getting worse, and keeps impressing. this tape goes in j cole's head, and throws his thoughts down musically.. aside from that, most of the production is done by the man himself. admirable. he is puttin in wooork. i loove best friend too.. i love it all, but really relating to best friend right now. that shit is soo good.. i nearly fucking cried to this one. the production on this is so good! flipped aaliyah, and it worked more than well.. every song is my favorite. seriously. i can't keep saying "i love this song", because seriously i love them all. every single song, is my favorite. ALSO, let me throw this in the air, i am a BIG, and AVID, 90's hip hop junkie. most of the hip hop i listen to, is a decade old.. most of the time, when i listen to "new" hip hop, it's because of my mixtape mondays.. or i hear shit when i'm out, and usually have no idea what it is.. i'm big on supporting old hip hop, and it's rare i give new artists a shot.. but j cole is the fucking future right now. he is fully taking hip hop in the right direction, and he's doing it without being a veteren, we need that right now. so raw. so fucking raw.. and i'll continue to eat the fuck out of this mixtape probably until the end of the year and beyond. get it now.
5 out of fucking 5. be the one to tell me different. p.s. still love "blow up", shit needs to play everywhere.
i've been trying to download this mixtape all day. pun intended, but the servers are going haywire.. because well, it's girl talk. so if you want to download this, WHICH YOU SHOULD, be patient cause it's going to take a few tries. especially since he's releasing this shit ABSOLUTELY FREE! that's what happens when you have a dude using samples like crazy, he relies on his live shows and word of mouth for funds, and i frankly, have no fuckin problem with that! the tape is available via two ways, one single mp3 (one continuous track), and mp3s. i downloaded the mp3s seperately and only because it's the only download that wasn't over-flowing with internet hands trying to get a piece. i personally like girl talks previous release to this one, and feel this one isn't as smooth. i really did not feel the first track at all, and that made me kind of hesitant while listening.. then the second track comes in haaaaaaardddd, some craig mack greatness and your worries are put at ease. it's worth the download (good luck!), it'll make you rap along with familiar tunes 3.5/5. omnomnom. twork twork twork!! pop champagne!
the very first time i discovered keys n krates was on youtube. i was immediately obsessed. & when i found out about a given opportunity to see them live, i nearly peed my pants, but i also wasn't sure what to expect. when trying to find people to come see them with me, i was asked "what are they? what do they play?". that question is so fucking hard to answer lemme tell you.. and the response that escaped my mouth was "they're like.. hip hop, electro, indie, mash up.. mixers?". what they go by, is "the live remix". composed of three, tune (drums), flo (turntables), and matisse (keys); they form to bring you exactly that, a live remix. sometimes when hearing them, you're too busy dancing to think "how the fuck did they come up with this!?".. but it hits you. these guys take music and twist it in their own beautiful way. everything they put out has been a fucking gem, and if you ever have the opportunity to see them, do so. this mixtape is no different.. my cousin and i threw it on last week and i literally did not want to stop driving til it was over. it's fuckin' amazing. stop sleeping. get it. 5/5
so as much as i am into hip hop (it changed my life completely, love you forevs), i'm more than just that. my music taste varies and is VERY eclectic. i enjoy punk, i like rock, and i LOOOOVE my indie. i basically like anything that's good. hahahahah. from tokyo police club to system of a down to nirvana to death cab to smoosh. my music moods jump all over the place. hip hop just stays in rotation the most. so when i found out jamaica did a mixtape, i kind of almost jizzed my pants. they made a mixtape of songs that they figure perfect for road trips. being that i'm half french, and that i love road trips as much as beer, i found this mixtape to be completely fitting. i decided it was a must especially after seeing the track list.
1: I’ll be around - The Spinners 2: Short & Entertaining - Jamaica GOOSE Rmx 3: Message in a bottle - The Police 4: Won’t get fooled again - The Who 5: The diary of horace wimp - ELO 6: Voyages - Michel Polnareff 7: Love Endeavor - Alice Smith Maurice Fulton Rmx Tonton Edit 8: The Runners - The Three Degrees 9: Untitled - Dj Falcon 10: Sabotage - Beastie Boys / Alec Metric Redit 11: Franck Sinatra & BIG Juicy edit 12: Jupiter - Sebastien Leger 13: Lettre à France - Michel Polnareff
this tape goes from old rock to electro, even throwing some beastie boys and biggie smalls in there. the best part about it is it really feels like "on the road" music. it's mixed really well. the correlation between different genres comes out beautifully smooth. i find that better mixtapes are always made to sound like one continuous song. that's the beauty of mixing. taking a shit load of tracks and making them sound like one continuous song to fill your ears with music love. i'm going to go ahead and give this mixtape a 5/5. apparently this is their third, so i need to catch up and get the other two.. but this definitely is making the whole "college mind fuck read til your eyes collapse" process a lot easier. road trip anyone?!
i haven't done a mixtape monday in a minute.. then i saw that we have some new shit from nas.. i took a listen to this on thursay, and was going to post it then, but decided to wait.. wait no further, you're getting this right at midnight!
so should i just give this a five outta five already or what's the deal!?
nas already announced he's releasing a lost tapes 2.. and nothing greater can come to this world, until we received this teaser.
hearing new shit from nas always excites me.. always!
NaS is king.. and i don't even wanna rate this cuz i am biased as fuck right now, too excited.. and that excited-ness is coming off as biased reviewing.. so i won't.
i really dig it though. it's fucking great.. and you can have it too! yayurrr! 5/5. HAHAHA dammit.
wowzers. three mixtapes in a row.. ! but i had to. i have this sort of love/hate relationship with wale. i really liked what he's put forth in the past, but seeing him live was another story. seeing him live made him come off as a prick.. and i done hailed it as "the money's got to wale". which could be completely true, or it could've just been a bad night.. but i find that when you're choosing to do music as your profession.. you have to realize that shows could be your only impression, so a shitty attitude could make you lose a lot of fans. you should ALWAYS put 100% into your shows, because it might be the 39746519024th time you've done that same performance, but it's somebody's FIRST time to see YOU.. not to say that his show was bad.. it was a really good show.. but wale himself didn't seem into it.. i gave it a 9/10 in review, which i don't regret.. but he still didn't seem into it. SO, after seeing this bad boy while cruising the net, i was a little skeptical.. BUT. i'm willing to give the tape and wale another shot.. here we go.. i'll start off with a tracklisting..
TRACK LISTING 1. Wale-The Problem 2. Wale-The MC 3. Wale-The Soup 4. Wale-The Breeze Cool 5. Wale-The Friends Strangers 6. Wale-The Number Won 7. Wale-The Eyes of The Tiger 8. Wale-The War 9. Wale-The Breakup Song 10. Wale-The Work Workin 11. Wale-The Black N Gold 12. Wale-The Manipulation 2 13. Wale-The Best In The League 14. Wale-The Posse Cut 15. Wale-The Guilty Pleasure No Hands 16. Wale-The Trip Downtown 17. Wale-The Ambitious Girl 18. Wale-The Motivation B Right 19. Wale-The Cloud 20. Wale-The Power 21. Wale-The Flight
the intro accapella is beautiful. i like accapella speeches that come out so clean. he starts off by saying how he's making changes, how he's made mistakes, how people are saying he's under-rated, how he's under pressure, and how he just wants to work. if you're telling the truth wale, you may have just won me over.. again. "i fear that my fans feel that i failed". okay wale. you said it first! hahaha. i really like this mixtape. wale is a talented fucker, and bad attitude the night i saw him or not.. he is talented.. and this tape shows it.. each song is consistent with the next, and it showcases what wale can do very well. "the breeze cool" is probably my third favorite song on the tape. his delivery is great, and he establishes that wale sound a little stronger than i personally have ever heard.. i like "sneaker game messy" haha. that was clever.. and it's nice that he's never willing to not scream out how much his love for shoes is. "friends strangers" includes snippets from jerry seinfield which mesh in really well.. good job dj. holla dj. do your thing dj. this is the second song i've heard today about abortion, and sometimes you kind of forget how big of a deal that is.. and how often that shit happens. kinda makes you think. i like his story-telling rap a lot.. it's hard to find people that are new that can carry that story-telling torch, and it's nice to hear someone who can do it well. "the number won" is another lyrical showcase! the tape is consistent i'm telling you. wale's flow just fits with everything. his flow over every beat is so crisp. when you want what you want and you say what you want and how bad you want it and ahhh. it's good shit. that's as far as i'm going to go.. this is a good tape.. and every song is fucking great.. i'm kind of not ready for what people are going to say, cause i'm going to go ahead and give this shit a 4.5/5. i did three mixtapes today, and i really thought wale was going to get the lowest rating out of all three.. but this shit is classic wale, he's improved drastically and he won me back. i think it's cleaner than j. coles, even though i think j cole is better than wale.. this tape is better. wale did it. it's close to a perfect mixtape man, it's fucking close.. and the fact that he dropped a mixtape instead of an album makes me applaud him even more.. he threw it down.. and he threw a large vocabulary in there to prove his intellect. fuckin' with politics and world issue references to get your learn on.. and he did it all whilst talking about nothing. the only thing that took away from it was that some instrumentals didn't cut it for me, but honestly.. everything he says is honest, and hip hop. so take a listen and grab it.. here: CLICK
i knew i'd have to do a mixtape monday on this tape as soon as aggie played songs on her show friday night.. this mixtape was a struggle and a half to get when i tried last week.. my first download failed, and my second only had three songs?! dafuCk?! finally after my third i was pissed and said, "this better be fucking a 'good ass mixtape'". i had already listened to it without listening to it.. so i'm giving it my overall FOURTH real listen today.. plus i get to see big sean in five days so it's proper i get to it. let us begin.
this mixtape takes everything people want right now and throws into one. it's something that real heads will say "this shit is fucking hipster", and that hipsters will say, "hip hop is stepping up!". it has that kid sister/ m.i.a. / daft punk / cudi / kanye vibe that kanye has currently been going for. it takes electro sounds with fun hip hop and mixes them up into a jumble.. now anyone who knows me, knows i'm 80% hip hop, and 20% indie/electro.. so for me, i liked it. it's strictly bangers. amazing lyrics are a little rare in this one, but it definitely gets you moving with sounds that are new, fresh, and pleasing. the mixing is kinda weird.. but you forget about it once consequence or talib speak.. you're kinda like "ohhhh, okay, there might be something lyrical on here".. which i find makes it a win/win for hip hop heads that were a little doubtful about it. it's definitely different, and that's no shocker. kanye is always trying to push his boundaries and make sure what he puts out gets people talking. this tape is everywhere right now, getting played all over my xm, and you can't get away from it.. which is kind of nice.. free music, free good music, and opening with a dubstep beat.. hey. it's a beautiful thing. what i really like about this tape, is that it's really jazzy.. it's slow bob your head type hip hop. groovin type hip hop.. which i haven't heard on a tape for awhile.. so hey. let's get it. a lot of people were saying how this tape was "too R&B" and "not hip hop". which i won't deny, it has a lot of r&b swag type songs on it.. but some are good, some are shmeh. i'll never get sick of the popular demand beat.. EVERRRRRRR!! and pusha t flows well on it. like what?! pusha t did the damn thing. which surprised me.. pusha t fans don't hate me for saying so! i dug it, put your bottles down, i dug it. GLC? not sure how i feel yet. "whatever you want".. big sean sounds like asher. i like it. hahaha.. not a big fan of this beat, but the song flows well, and i thoroughly enjoyed it.. minus that autotune. gagfest. "everything about you" by tony williams, is a short snippet.. and totally r&b.. and it's not a bad song, but i can see why heads are like "the fuck is this shit". what you people have to realize, is that kanye is trying to showcase who he has coming. relax for a second. take a breather. it's not even that long.. and the john legend song that follows shouldn't make you stop.. it gets better trust me. 11 songs in.. i've decided i don't like GLC. ahahha. making me yawn man, making me yawn. sounds like a soundclick rapper but with okay lines. has a voice that makes me not wanna listen. not down. sorreh. EEEERRRRRAAAAASSSSEEE MEEEEEE!! kid cudi. there are no words to explain my un-dying love for you. SHE WANTS TO ERASE ME.. a couple days no talkin, i see my baby.. love this song til life. this shit is so different and yummy i wanna eat it for breakfast! and lunch! and dinner! and snacks! and just yum.. plus hearing this version is sooo nice.. because the version i posted on my blog a couple weeks back wasn't mastered. this shit is sooo smoooth man. soooo smoooth. i wanna fuck it. like seriously, i wanna take this song and make out with it. this is exactly how i've felt with so many relationships and the way it sounds hit me with the emotion i felt when i done broke up with dudes. like.. yeahhhh. been there man. been there.. and to have it captured in a song hurts.. but it hurts so GOOD. plus kanye is back on that kanye tip bro. you gots ta likes it. mr hudson is definitely something interesting. i feel like he's giving high fives to everyone with his voice. that's what his voice is man. it's the high five feeling.. i likeee it.. talented mother fucker with an interesting voice.. i like him. * high five mr. hudson. double high five..

this mixtape is all over the place and kinda fucks with you. all the songs are completely random and have you confused and scratching your head like "what's going on!?".. indie to electro to rock to hip hop to r&b.. WHATS HAPPENING!? it fucks with you a bit, but the title doesn't lie.. it's good music. you just gotta get yourself into a certain state before listening to it.. and be ready for something completely different every time a song ends. i'm debating whether to give it a 3.5 or 4.. just because i feel like this mixtape could've been three mixtapes with the amount of different type songs on it.. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. i'm going to give it a 3.5/5.. but, if i took my favorite songs and threw them on to a separate mixtape, it would've easily been a five.. and there are enough songs on here to do so. i just think this one jumps a little too up and down for me. there are soooo many songs i like, but i think a lot of it doesn't belong on here.. it's just too much random.. 30 songs long though, i'll definitely burn a copy for my life.. and you can too.. get it: CLICK
i think the best part about rappers dropping mixtapes is that it's strictly about the music. they go fucking hard to get their name up. j cole is that shit right now.. and i really want him to make drake fall to his knees and say "i honor you".. and with shit like this, it's gonna happen. i am so in love with j cole right now. so so so in love. it's nice to see younger lyricists come into the game speaking loud. j cole just wants his voice heard, and it's time more people get to listening.
this mixtape is full of emotion. "it won't be long" hits hard. i literally almost teared up while listening to it. the beat is mellow and doesn't sound like anyone could rap over it.. but he does.. and he does well. his cadence is smooth, with that j cole swag. after listening to this you want everything to be thrown at him, with someone saying "here kid, you can have it all. you deserve it". "bun b for president" is basically homage to bun b. not sure how i feel about it. lyrically it's well.. but i'm iffy on it only because i'm not sure how i feel about bun b. & i'm never really down for money rap. rarely ever. so i just skipped the song. lemme know what you think, and if thoughts are positive, i'll give it another go. "problems". WOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!! this might just be the best song of the fucking year!!!! i know i say that too often, but music just keeps getting better. all about the fucking struggle man.. all about the struggle man.. and when you take such a simple beat and fuck the shit out of it, to make it sound like there were fifty thousand producers on that shit.. UNH! ughhhhh.. sooooo good. intro goes, "dear mrs. bill collector/ i know you're just doin' your job don't mean to dis-respect ya/ but we been going through this pain since way back/ told you when i get the dough i would pay back/".. no fucking hard punchlines. just rap.. might be a little depressing for some.. but it's that struggle that takes you back to why hip hop should be used.. to get out of this shit.. and that's the kind of hip hop that makes you think and realize, no matter where you're at.. no matter how tough shit is, you're never alone. "my middle finger to the law, i'm bussin' off tryna touch the sky/ my teacher said 'impossible' but ima fuckin' try".. wowww. big song. big fucking song. "lights please" totally different song.. all about girls and sex.. which can sometimes be a lose for me, but i dug it. "all she ever want me to do is un-hook her bra/ and all i really want is for her to go down low/ before you know it, she wet enough to get drown slow../" made me laugh. "how you made the darkness seem so bright".. like what! aw. cute na cute naman! young chris doesn't totally kill the song either. it's not bad. "premeditated murder" had a few metaphors i wasn't too proud of. that othello line, yucky.. this song was a little too cliche for me.. it had some good lines and some bad ones.. "i'ma kill the game, and invite witnesses/ no death penalty, i'm givin life sentences/ like keep grindin boy, your life can change in one year/ & even when it's dark out, the sun is shining somewhere/" was ill. that whole second verse was ill.. worth the listen, but not my fav. "THE BLOW UP"!! typed in caps because it deserves nothing less! hahaha. hungry! hungry! j cole is fucking hungry! GET FED DIRTY! lovelovelovelovelovelove. squint your face and mean mug bitches! big tune! "shook ones freestyle" i had to. CMON! mobb deep's shook ones is one of the dirtiest beats of all time.. and j cole doesn't ruin it. however, it does seem a little forced. he rhymes a little fast over it, and it didn't completely go over me.. but paying homage to mobb deserves some hands in the air.. and his lines help you to forget how rushed his flow in. i'm not even sure if he was really rapping that fast or if they sped it up.. cause it kind of sounds like they did.. "who dat" is fire.. i remember when i first saw this vid online i nearly died. watched that ten times in a row. THIS SONG IS AMAZING !! this song goes so fucking hard. it hits you in the fucking face and makes me wanna scream "FUCK YEAH! J COLE!".
"suddenly your idols is your competition"..

overall, it's a good mixtape, and i don't think i'll ever expect anything less from j cole. he never fails man, never fails. & i'll give it a 3.5/5. & that's only because j cole is the man, and i expect his next mixtape to be a 5/5.. which i know it will be. don't sleep. j cole is it.. and you can get it! for free.. right here: CLICK
